Wedding Cakes

Singapore is a city defined by ethnic diversity and is often held up as an example of east meets west in many of the characteristics which make it so successful. What unites all resident and adopted Singaporeans is a love of food and the huge array of cuisines available and unique fusions certainly give a lot of scope for wedding banquets and catering.

In a city where business is booming hospitality for corporate and private functions is of the very highest standard indeed and this is certainly true of available wedding cuisine and specifically wedding cakes.

There are certain things without which a wedding would not be complete and the wedding cake is one of them. The tradition of wedding cakes is older than many of the ceremonial aspects of a wedding, dating back to medieval times when each guests would arrive with a cake and these would be piled on top of each other, foretelling the classic tiered wedding cake which predominates at weddings today.

Legend has it that if the happy couple can reach over the tiered cakes for a kiss then they would have a long and happy life. In modern times the ceremonial aspects remain in the form of cutting the cake, which provides one of the most important of wedding photo opportunities. The cake is then cut into pieces and each guest receives a slice as a token of thanks for their attendance and as a keepsake of the day. They can of course choose to eat it immediately if they prefer, and many do.

Since Victorian times, the traditional wedding cake has been made from a rich fruit case base covered with marzipan and heavily decorated with white fondant icing. Successively smaller tiers lead to the top on which figurines depicting the bride and groom are placed. While this is still a popular design for wedding cakes there is an increasing tendency for alternative designs, colours and ingredients and within Singapore, a nation famed for its culinary exploration, there is a great many designs to choose from.

Tiered cakes are still the most common choice but are available in a range of elaborate and sophisticated styles. Heavy fruit cake bases may be replaced with anything you like and chocolate is particularly popular. Icing designs and decoration can also reflect your personalities and people generally have much more fun with the designs. Rather than topped with bride and groom figurines, it can reflect some shared passion for sports, music or anything else.

A popular alternative to larger tiered cakes it to construct the tiers from layers of cupcakes. Not only can this offer a visually stunning alternative but makes it much easier to share the cake with guests, each receiving their own cupcake memento.

Making wedding cakes is a highly skilled art which can take time so it is always best to contact your master baker/confectioner in plenty of time. They will normally have a selection for you to view and choose from or you can discuss with them your own special requirements. Costs will generally include delivery to the wedding venue and erection of the cake on site, if applicable.
